Чудо о приветствии на расстоянии Стефана Пермского и Сергия Радонежского имеет развитую устную и письменную традиции, продолжающиеся до настоящего времени. Письменная традиция нам известна начиная с текста Пахомия Серба в составе его редакций Жития Сергия Радонежского, причем можно предполагать литературный источник — рассказ о патриархе Никифоре и Феофане Исповеднике из Хроники Иоанна Зонары. В дальнейшем версия Пахомия с небольшими редакционными изменениями распространялась в рамках рукописной традиции Жития Сергия. Но уже в конце XV в. она получает самостоятельное бытование: особый интерес к этому сюжету демонстрирует новгородская книжность — в качестве отдельной статьи он был включен в Новгородский вид Псковской редакции Простого пролога. В первой половине XVI в. Чудо входит в рукописную традицию Жития Стефана Пермского — оно помещается в некоторые краткие редакции и летописную статью о Стефане, где акцент переходит на провидческий дар самого Стефана. В XVII столетии в месяцесловных статьях о Стефане Пермском появляется отличный от пахомиевского вариант сюжета с дополнительными фактическими подробностями.

The Miracle of the Exchange of Greetings at a Distance between Saint Stephen of Perm and Saint Sergius of Radonezh in the Russian Manuscript Book Tradition

The story about the miracle of the exchange of greetings at a distance between St. Stephen of Perm and St. Sergius of Radonezh has a developed oral and written tradition, which continues to the present day. The written tradition, as we know it, began with Pachomius the Serb’s redactions of the Life of St. Sergius of Radonezh. It seems plausible that the literary source for this miracle was the story about Patriarch Nikephoros and Theophanes the Confessor from the Chronicle of Joannes Zonaras. Pachomius’s version of the story about the miracle persisted in the manuscript tradition of the Life of St. Sergius with minor changes. At the end of the 15th century, however, it began to appear in manuscripts separately from the Life. The story about the miracle was of interest to some Novgorodian bookmen, who included it in the Novgorodian type of the Pskov redaction of the so-called Simple Prologue. In the first half of the 16th century, the story about the miracle was included in some short redactions of the Life of St. Stephen of Perm and in the Chronicle article about St. Stephen. These texts emphasize Stephen’s visionary gift. In the 17th century, a new version of the story appeared in the Menologion among the articles about St. Stephen of Perm. This version is different from Pachomius’s text and expands the story with additional details.
