Vassian Patrikeev in the KirilloBelozerskii Monastery: Facts and Hypotheses
The absence of not only autographs but even of lifetime copies of the works of Prince Vasilii Ivanovich (monk Vassian) Patrikeev, a famous writer of the first third of the 16th century, is one of the most significant obstacles in the study of his life and writings. This article examines the information about the tonsuring of the prince found in chronicles and observes that only one brief chronicle, which comes from the Kirillo-Belozerskii Monastery, mentions the exact date of this event (February 8, 1499). The study also discusses activities of the so-called “Bookman X” (Olga Novikova’s term) of the Kirillo-Belozerskii Monastery, whose work testifies to his extraordinary erudition. Crucial for the establishment of the identity of this bookman is “The Genealogy of Lithuanian Princes,” which he wrote about 1501. This text presents the genealogy of only one direct line of Lithuanian princes. This peculiarity suggests that the author of this version of the “Genealogy” mentions only his own direct ancestors, and for that matter, he could only be Prince Vasilii from the House of Gediminid, Ivan Patrikeev’s son, who was forced to take up monkhood with a new name of Vassian and was exiled to the Kirillo-Belozerskii Monastery in 1499. The article substantiates the hypothesis that “Bookman X” was Vassian Patrikeev himself. This bookman repeatedly used manuscripts from Efrosin Belozerskii’s personal library. This fact suggests that he was Efrosin’s close pupil. Vassian spent several years in the Kirillo-Belozerskii Monastery before Grand Prince Vasilii III allowed him to return to Moscow. After his return, Vassian became one of the most influential persons in the state, and several other monks of this monastery also made brilliant careers in the Church at that time. It is quite plausible that Efrosin also followed Vassian Patrikeev to Moscow in the 1500s. There he took part in the preparation of the Holy Mysteries in the Church of the Myrrhbearers near the Kremlin.
