The Miscellany Starchestvo: A Version from the Pskovo-Pecherskii Monastery
This article describes the contents of the manuscript miscellany Starchestvo (Eldership) that was presumably compiled at the Pskovo-Pecherskii Monastery. This version of this type of miscellanies is very special because it treats disciplinary and regulatory aspects of monastic life as issues of secondary importance, while completely different things come first. It specifies not the performance of the rite of initiation into the monastic state but the meaning of the tonsure, not the way to put on various vestments but the symbolic meaning of the monastic attire, not the manner of saying prayers or their numbers but the symbolic meaning of new monks’ prayers.
Patristic writings constitute an important part of this version of the miscellany. It begins with “The Parable about the Soul and the Body” by Kirill of Turov. The article examines the history of the manuscripts of this version of the Starchestvo that date from the 16th to the 19th century. Moreover, it traces how this version of the miscellany spread from the Pskovo-Pecherskii Monastery to the Snetogorskii Monastery and then reached the Leksa Old Believer community. The study also considers the changes in the text of the Jesus Prayer that appeared in the course of redaction.
