The article examines the Service to Euthymius of Novgorod, composed by Pachomius the Serb at the request of Archbishop Jonah around the year 1465. The Service, along with the Life of the saint written at the same time, was intended to initiate the local veneration of the saint. The article examines 15th-century manuscripts of the Service and determines the composition of the included texts, their liturgical status and certain features of their formal and substantive structure. The authors point out the use in the Service of both the traditional set of hierarchal topoi and some rather rare motifs in hymnography. For example, the motif of the ‘human choice’ of Euthymius for the episcopacy by the Novgorodians through casting lots was used. The authors conclude that Pachomius rarely borrowed from other Services in this rite, limiting himself to the inclusion of a single sticheron from the Service to St. Nicholas and the adaptation of some hymns from the Service to St. Sava of Serbia. To a much greater extent, the hymnography of the Service appears to have been influenced by the text of the Life, which shares a number of similar motifs. An appendix presents the publication of the text of the Service to Euthymius of Novgorod according to the manuscript held in the Russian State Historical Archive (RGIA), fond 834, inventory 3, no. 3977, copied by the scribe Ofonas.
