The Brief Version of the Life of Metropolitan Peter

This article examines the early history of the cult of Metropolitan Peter and argues that the liturgical commemoration of him as a saint was initiated by Metropolitan Cyprian. The study analyzes variant readings and considers the origin and dating of 15th-century manuscript copies of two versions of the Life of Metropolitan Peter, one of which is known as the Cyprianic version and the other as the brief version. The results of this study suggest that the Cyprianic version of the Life was compiled first. The study also  revealed that the brief version of the Life of Metropolitan Peter and the Life of Metropolitan Alexis were edited in a similar manner. All these facts suggest that the editing of the Life of Metropolitan Peter and compiling of its brief version could take place after 1459 in connection with the events that led to the de-facto independence of the Moscow part of the Russian Church.
