‘Being Perplexed, as it was Proper for the Most Venerable’ (Interpretation of the Phrase from the Tale of Boris and Gleb)

The article analyzes in detail a single phrase from the Tale of Boris and Gleb. The phrase describes the bewilderment that arose during the burial of Gleb, the younger of the murdered holy brothers. Based on a comparison of all versions of the narrative about the brothers and a detailed lexical analysis, it is suggested that Gleb was not initially buried in a coffin but was left at the place of his death, covered with felled trees. This was due to pre-Christian beliefs about the danger posed to the living by a deceased person who died an unnatural, violent death at a young age (‘mortgaged dead’ according to D.K. Zelenin). The cycle of writings about the first Russian saints Boris and Gleb was largely dedicated to overcoming these pagan beliefs.
Keywords: Tale of Boris and Gleb, burial rites, mortgaged dead, paganism, Christianization.
