According to the anonymous Life of Varlaam of Keret, St. Varlaam killed his wife and wandered across the seas in a boat with her corpse, consumed by great grief, begging God for forgiveness. Sergii Shelonin wrote the Canon to St. Varlaam in the middle of the 17th century. The article analyzes these texts in connection with Russian folk ideas about the unclean dead. The author also demonstrates the similarities with the plot of the 15th-century novel Le Morte d’Arthur by the English writer Thomas Malory — the story of the knight Sir Pedivere.

Keywords: Varlaam of Keret, life, canon, Sergii Shelonin, Thomas Malory, murder due to jealousy, repentance, penance, suffering, holiness.
