An Eighteenth-Century “Mirror for Princes” and Its Source: An Admonition to Peter the Great from Semen Klimov and the Exposition of Chapters by Agapetos
This is the first special philological study of the manuscript entitled О pravosudiiu nachalstvuiushikh, pravde i bodrosti ikh (On the justice of rulers, their truth and vigor), which was intended for presentation to Emperor Peter the Great by the Kharkov Cossack Semen Klimov. This text is an instruction to the ruler and it follows the Byzantine tradition of the mirror for princes genre. Semen Klimov, an author of the first quarter of the 18th century, wrote his instruction to the monarch in syllabic verse; only the “Preface to the Pious Reader” is written in prose. In his rather short poetic text, which covers 24 leaves, Semen Klimov designated his main themes: “On Justice,” “On Truth,” and “On Vigor.” To these sections he added the discourse “On the Humility of the Highest Ones.” This study gives a brief description of the manuscript and reveals phrases which Semen Klimov borrowed from the text entitled Pouchenie blagogo tsarstva (An admonition of the good tsardom), a Slavonic translation of Agapetos’s Exposition of Chapters (Ekthesis kephalaion). This Byzantine text was one of the best known writings of this genre in Russia. The comparison of the text by Semen Kilmov with his source allowed to detect which ideas of the Byzantine mirror he valued the most. Moreover, the article shows in which part of his text Semen Klimov presented these borrowed ideas and how he reinterpreted them. This analysis allows to make conclusions regarding the influence of the Byzantine text on Semen Klimov’s reasoning about justice, truth and vigor of a ruler.
