The Narration of the Battle with Mamai as a Polemic against the “Chronicle Story of the Battle of Kulikovo”
The relationship between the text of the “Chronicle Story of the Battle of Kulikovo” (“Letopisnaya povest’ o Kulikovskoi bitve”), which is found in several chronicles based on the chronicle compilation of Metropolitan Photius of the year 1418, and the Narration of the Battle with Mamai (Skazanie o Mamaevom poboishche) has long remained a matter of controversy. While some scholars asserted that these works were directly connected, others rejected this idea. This article argues that the Narration of the Battle with Mamai was not only created later and based on the “Chronicle Story” but also contains polemics against it regarding the role of the main participants in the battle of Kulikovo. In the “Chronicle Story,” the main hero of the battle is Grand Prince of Moscow Dmitrii Ivanovich. Scholars are divided in their opinion over his representation in the Narration. Some of them believe that this text presents a kind of panegyric to the prince, but others argue that the Narration belittles and distorts his role in the battle. Based on the comparison of what the “Chronicle Story” and the Narration say about the role of the participants in the battle, the author of the article suggests that this discrepancy can be resolved if we assume the use of the motif of epic duality or the principle of pairing of complementing main characters in the Narration. In this case, the role of the heroic warrior prince is assigned to Prince Vladimir Serpukhovskoi, while Grand Prince Dmitrii Ivanovich acts as an ideal Christian, who receives a blessing for the battle with Mamai “za zemliu Russkuiu i za veru hristianskuiu” (for the Russian land and for the Christian faith) and ensures the victory over the enemy by his unshakable faith in Christ and extensive prayers. The Narration also presents other types of epic duality in the pairs of the brothers Olgerdoviches, the monks Peresvet and Osliabia, and other characters.
