XVII в.

An Excursus on the Month of March in the Life of Stephen of Perm: Sources and the Manuscript Tradition

A peculiar encyclopedic quality of the Life of Stephen of Perm is due to  numerous excursuses on various topics that Epiphanius the Wise included in the text. One of these excursuses is devoted to the month of March. It contains a list of biblical events related to this month from the Creation of the World to the expected Second Coming of Jesus Christ. The source that Epiphanius used to write this passage was the Preface to the March volume of the Stishnoi Prologue. Epiphanius altered stylistically the corresponding part of the text and added quotations, motifs and expressions from the Bible and liturgical texts. The text about the month of March from the Prologue and this excursus by Epiphanius circulated as popular monastic cell reading — they were copied in encyclopedic miscellanies from the 15th century on. Epiphanius’s excursus was a serious competitor to its source. It was included in collections of calendar and eschatological texts. As a calendar article, it was used together with its source by Ivan Rykov when in  the second half of the 16th century he was compiling his Preface to the Rafli, a special book for fortune telling. As an eschatological article, a part of it was included in the Compilation about the Antichrist, which was created no later than the early 1640s. In total, six variants of this passage from the Life of Stephen of Perm have been identified in manuscripts from the middle of the 15th to the beginning of the 20th century, and some of them became the basis of independent manuscript traditions.
